Aroma Q&A

Lavenders

Q:  Is there a difference in Lavenders? Aren't all Lavenders the same?

A:   No! there are several different types of Lavender. Looking at the botanical names will help. Touted as the most theraputic Lavender is Lavendula Angustifolia.  Lavender Population and Lavender Barrame are both of this botanical variety. Lavender Officinalis is popular but doesn't really pack the therapy punch I prefer! You would never want a Lavender 40/42 if you wanted any theraputic benefit. Lavender 40/42 has the most floral scent of all the Lavenders, though it’s therapeutic levels are the lowest. The reason is that the 40 – 42 refers to the standardization of both Linalool and Linalyl acetate resulting in a very consistent floral scent.  It is popular for candle and soap making but not really good for killing virsues or bacterial infections and so on. The history of Lavender is fascinating! It was used to successfully combat the Bubonic Plague! I bet they weren't using a 40/42 then!!
